June US EPA Report

While EPA staff were not able to come to St. Louis in June, resulting in monthly meeting cancellation, they sent the following report:

the update on remedial activities at the Velsicol Chemical Corporation Superfund Sites (VBP and FPS) provided by US EPA and their site team. Some figures and photos are attached as well as included in the narrative below.

Velsicol Burn Pit

  • Continue general ISTT demobilization, deconstruction, and housekeeping activities.

  • Continue crating and packing equipment and materials for demobilization.

  • Continue equipment and materials inventory.

  • Commence demolition of ISTT cover – June 2025

  • Fence removal – June/July 2025

  • Excavation of Remnant Burn Debris Pile – July 2025

  • Continue Restoration as able

  • Contracting package for Burn Pit Remedial Investigation ready to be submitted to offeror for proposal and cost estimate. Should be awarded by end of this fiscal year.

 Velsicol Chemical Corporation

DGVBW Work

  • Work platform construction has advanced to a finished grade at Station 23+50.

  • Additional stone fill continued arriving.

  • King Pile drilling activities continued. King Piles 22 through 54 drilled and filled with concrete.

  • King Piles driven from Station 14+13 to Station 18+43 (205 of 505 king piles installed).

  • Sheet Piles driven from Station 13+80 to Station 18+43 (204 of 535 sheet piles installed).

  • Turbidity curtain extension to Station 34+00.

  • Turbidity, dust, noise, water level, and seismic monitoring continued. No exceedances reported.

  • Concrete field testing on-going and are meeting project specifications. Concrete break data received from King Piles 21, 22, 26, and 31. All concrete cylinder breaks have above 4,000 psi at a 3 to 4 day cure times.

  • Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) testing (non-destructive testing method used to evaluate the integrity of concrete) occurred on king piles.

TIP Test results are reported as satisfactory; AECOM quality manager in communication daily regarding TIP Testing.

  • No wastewater has been collected from the king pile drilling activities. Wastewater collected from staging area dewatering activities has been sampled and submitted for chemical analysis.

  • Drilling waste continued to be hauled off-site to GFL Landfill.

  • AECOM subject matter expert mobilized to Site to install inclinometers. 3 out of the 5 Inclinometers installed.

  • USACE providing 100% oversight of RA activities

Upcoming DGVBW Work

  • Sheet pile delivery and installation to continue.

  • King pile delivery, installation, and drilling to continue.

  • Complete installation of inclinometers.

  • Working platform construction to continue.

  • Turbidity curtain extension to continue. Curtain anticipated to progress to Station 38+00.

  • Planning activities occurring for drainage and backfill activities, and future waterside platform removal.

 OU1 (OU means operable unit) – Contracting package ready to be submitted to offeror for Bid. EPA’s request for proposal will include the remaining OU1 design components and other post-RD, Post-RA, and technical assistance elements. Should be awarded by end of this fiscal year.

OU3 – Waiting on OU3 Contract to be awarded (June/July?) to start the floodplain/riverbank excavation RA.

OU4 – EPA reviewing Final NEBA, Draft BERA
